The brand of vehicles was known for its royal look and performance. Founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897, the company successfully sold 35.2 million cars. When Olds Motor Vehicle Company was phased out, it was the second oldest car maker in the world. The first vehicle launched by Oldsmobile was the stylish Dash Olds and it was well-received by people. But the company ran into financial troubles and was acquired by General Motors in 1908. GM continued to sell cars in the name of Oldsmobile. Known for its technical innovations, Oldsmobile cars were grand success and the owners were proud to own such a car. GM also introduced many features that added sophistication to the luxury cars. One among them was the introduction of automatic transmission in the year 1940. Also, Oldsmobile was pioneer in producing vehicles with Rocket V8 engines in 1949. Then during mid 60s the company started selling vehicles with OHV V8 engines with slightly modified designs. During 1950, Oldsmobile introduced Oldsmobile 88 which had long run in the market after Chrysler New Yorker. After the world war the brand was able to withstand the recession with slight re-modifications and the decade 1960 saw notable vehicles named Oldsmobile 442, Cutlass, F-85, Vista Cruiser, Starfire and Jetstar. Oldsmobile could keep the market from 1970s to 80s but it lost its position in 90s and GM started concentrating on Chevrolet and Pontiac. In 2000 Oldsmobile unveiled its SUV named Bravada and then its final model was named Final 500. It was in the market by 2004. Thus, one of the oldest car manufacturers completed its journey successfully. | |
